Genetic Counselor
Duties and Responsibilities:
Genetic counselors provide assistance and education to
individuals at risk or diagnosed of certain medical conditions that are inherited.
These counselors help people understand and adapt to the medical, psychological
and familial implications of genetic contributions to disease. They take a look
at family history to provide a better understanding of genetics and the disease
being assessed. Testing, management, prevention, resources and research are
offered in this field to make better decisions about how to lead a healthy life
and make better choices. Some genetic counselors work outside clinical practice
in research, education, public health and industry settings. They are knowledgeable
and up-to-date on genetic developments and can help better analyze genetic
testing. They can guide you and give you counseling on these areas.

Cancer genetics
Cardiovascular genetics
Metabolic genetics
Neurogenetics
Pediatric
Genetics
Prenatal
Genetics
Salary: $50,000-$66,00
Education: One must obtain a Master’s degree in Genetic
Counseling from an ACGC Accredited Program. Once all requirements have been
met, one may apply and sit for the Certification Examination
I think I would like to become a genetic counselor because
it seems like an interesting job by finding out the family history and they get
paid well.
